Stupid Republican Congresscritter Lies About Matthew Shepard

I’m no fan of hate crimes legislation, mostly because I don’t believe that it matters one bit if someone murderers someone because they want their wallet, or if they do it because of their race, religion, or gender.

That said, these comments by North Carolina Republican Virginia Foxx are both wrong and stupid:

Uh, how does the NYT quotation prove that it was was the far Left calls a “hate crime”? “[T]he two men lured Mr. Shepherd out of a bar by saying they were gay.” You know as well as I, Doug, that if this were all the evidence that were presented, any judge would throw out the allegation of a “hate crime.” It speaks not at all to motivation, the essence of the so-called “hate crime.”

That is, unless you’re merely talking about creating a preferred class of victim. Which is, of course, what partisans for the radical homosexual agenda ARE talking about.

  2. James,

He was murdered because he was gay. We all know that, can we at least admit it ?

  3. And, again, I oppose hate crimes legislation.

But that doesn’t mean I’m going to be silent when ignorant people like Virginia Foxx spout obvious lies

  4. Jessica says:

I am gay and I agree with you. The hate crimes bill would not have saved Matthew Shephard. His killers are going to jail for life and that is all that we can ask.

I oppose the federal Hate Crimes Bill as all crimes are equal.

    Jess

  5. JAYoung says:

I’m also opposed to bill on principle, but lawmakers like Foxx who think they can fabricate stories about a “hoax” on the floor of the House of Representatives just make my blood boil. That Foxx did it with Shephard’s mother in the gallery is simply despicable.

  6. James Young says:

Perhaps he was killed because he was gay, Doug. But that statement does not prove it and, as a lawyer you know, words matter. Particularly when the far Left repeatedly demonstrates that it doesn’t understand the meaning of words. “Marriage” comes immediately to mind, but then again, you agree with them on that one.

    Never mind.

  7. Just a Thought says:

In order to avoid being targeted for a crime, an individual takes certain precautions. If a criminal is looking for a potential robbery victim, they might look for a weak person, walking alone with expensive jewelry. If I want to avoid being robbed, I would display confidence, walk in a group and not be too flashy. Now, consider a criminal who just wants to brutalize a person of color for no other reason other than the person’s race. Tell me … What precautions should I take to avoid being victimized? I suggest there are none, and that’s what makes these types of crime rise to an elevated level of heinousness.
