Below The Beltway

I believe in the free speech that liberals used to believe in, the economic freedom that conservatives used to believe in, and the personal freedom that America used to believe in.

Yankee Legend Announces Retirement

by @ Wednesday, April 1st, 2009. Filed under Baseball, New York Yankees, Sports

Things really won’t be the same when the new Yankee Stadium opens later this month, because the voice of the Yankees won’t be there:
The new Yankee Stadium may sound much different than the old one. Bob Sheppard, the public-address announcer for the Yankees since 1951, is retiring, according to Paul Doherty, a friend and agent [...]

Leno Rips Obama’s Auto Bailout Plan

by @ Wednesday, April 1st, 2009. Filed under Auto Industry, Barack Obama, Business, Economics, Humor, Politics

This is a good one:

The best line, though, is one that was left out of the clip:
According to the government, Rick Wagoner was forced to resign because of poor performance. That’s embarrassing. You run an organization that loses billions of dollars and then get fired by a guy who heads up an organization that loses [...]

Obama To Run G.M., After Saying He Has No Intention To Run G.M.

by @ Wednesday, April 1st, 2009. Filed under Auto Industry, Barack Obama, Business, Economics, Politics

If there were any doubts about the scope of the Obama Administration’s intentions regarding the auto industry, this should put them to rest:
The Obama administration will play a key role in reshaping General Motors’ board of directors over the next six months, potentially giving it even greater control in the management of the storied American [...]

Wurzelbacher Not Wow-ing Them In Pennsylvania

by @ Wednesday, April 1st, 2009. Filed under Politics

As I noted yesterday, Samuel “Joe The Pluimber” Wurzelbacher got a rather negative reception on the first leg of his anti card-check tour of Pennsylvania.
Well, it didn’t stop in Pittsburgh; yesterday, he was in Harrisburg:
Joe Wurzelbacher would not say who paid for him to come to Harrisburg to speak out against the proposed Employee Free [...]

A race in upstate New York to fill the seat vacated by now-Seantor Kirsten Gillibrand is too close to call:
A mere 65 votes separated the two candidates late Tuesday in a Congressional contest in upstate New York that received national attention and was widely seen as a referendum on the Obama administration’s economic recovery efforts.

The Assault On Contracts

by @ Wednesday, April 1st, 2009. Filed under Economics, Individual Liberty, Politics

The economic downturn, and the bailouts that have followed in it’s footsteps, is leading to an assault on contracts of all types:
Contracts everywhere are under assault.
The depth of the recession and the use of taxpayer dollars to bail out companies have made it politically acceptable for overseers to tinker with employment agreements.
So federal and local [...]

24 Flunks Washington Geography

by @ Wednesday, April 1st, 2009. Filed under 24, Television

One of the fun things about this season of 24 is the fact that it takes place right in my backyard, which is why it’s very amusing to see just how wrong the writers are when it comes to Washington geography:
Every week during this season of the Monday night program, which has moved its setting [...]

Prosecutors Seek To Drop Charges Against Ted Stevens

by @ Wednesday, April 1st, 2009. Filed under In The News, Legal, Politics

Shortly before Election Day, former Alaska Ted Stevens was convicted of a variety of corruption charges. This was most likely the biggest factor in his defeat on Election Day.
Now, in what can only be described as an absolute stunner, Federal prosecutors are asking that the convictions be voided and the charges dropped:
WASHINGTON — The Justice [...]
