Yesterday it was Mary Bono and VA Republican Attorney General nominee Ken Cuccinelli who found themselves friend-ed with birther lawyer Orly Taitz on Facebook.
Today, it’s Congressman Eric Cantor, the Minority Whip in the House of Representatives:
I am in total disbelief and greatly honored. Eric Cantor, Republican whip, second ranked Republican congressman has joined congresswoman Mary Bono and became my friend on Facebook. To me it means that the leadership of the Republican party understands the importance of the issues and legal cases I brought forward. I hope more congressmen and senators join and either become additional plaintiffs or bring to the House and Senate judicial committee hearings the issues of Obama’s illegitimacy to presidency as well as suspected illegal activities by Obama and his supporters.
And, sure enough:
Do I believe that Eric Cantor, Mary Bono, or Ken Cuccinelli are birthers ? Of course not.
But just as you wouldn’t want to be photographed at a rally standing next to a guy carrying a “Where’s The Birth Certificate ?” sign, you shouldn’t want to be connected on the Internet with the Queen Bee of the Birthers.
Update: David Weigel passes along this response from Congressman Cantor’s office:
A spokesman for Rep. Eric Cantor (R-Va.) has responded to Orly Taitz’s latest publicity stunt – her claim that when Cantor accepted her Facebook request, it proved that the “Republican party understands the importance of the issues and legal cases” of the Obama “birther” movement.
The response? No, Cantor doesn’t support Taitz’s cause. Not at all.
“A friend on Facebook is someone registering his or her support for your agenda,” said Cantor spokesman Joe Pounder. “She is registering her support for Eric Cantor, and nothing more. Not vice versa.”
Last time I checked, a friend request on Facebook had to be accepted by both sides, so that comment doesn’t entirely make sense to me.
Nonetheless, the fact that Orly is touting this social networking relationship as an endorsement of her should be reason enough for any politician with the slightest amount of self-respect to make it clear that there is no endorsement by eliminating that link.
