Below The Beltway

I believe in the free speech that liberals used to believe in, the economic freedom that conservatives used to believe in, and the personal freedom that America used to believe in.

Glenn Beck: Losing His Mind, And Losing Advertisers

by @ 7:36 am on August 18, 2009.

I’ve detailed some of Glenn Beck’s more insane antics in the past — see here, here, here, and here — but here’s a truly bizarre compilation from last week where Beck agrees that Obama is not Hitler, and then proceeds to tell us that Obama is Hitler:

Well, there finally appears to be some indication that Beck is paying a price for his antics:

NEW YORK (MarketWatch) — In what is shaping up to be one of the more effective boycott campaigns in years, advertisers are abandoning the “Glenn Beck” show on Fox News following the host’s incendiary comments that President Barack Obama is a “racist” and has a “deep-seated hatred for white people.”

Among the advertisers to pull spots from the popular cable talk show are Geico, owned by Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway (BRK .A 101,550, -600.00, -0.59%) (BRK .B 3,329, -26.13, -0.78%) ; Procter & Gamble (PG 51.93, -0.37, -0.71%) ; Sargento Cheese; and Progressive Insurance (PGR 16.26, -0.17, -1.04%) , according to the companies and Color of Change, one group that is organizing a campaign against the program.

Beck, who made the remarks during another Fox News program late last month, is among the network’s biggest draws, pulling in an average of about 2 million viewers. (Fox News is a unit of News Corp. (NWS 12.61, -0.40, -3.08%) , which also owns MarketWatch, the publisher of this report.)

Geico didn’t respond to a request for comment but sent Color of Change an email saying it had “instructed its ad-buying service to redistribute its inventory of rotational spots on [Fox] to their other network programs, exclusive of the Glenn Beck program.”

Privately held Sargento told its media buyer not to put any of its ads in Beck’s show, said a spokeswoman.

“We market our products to people regardless of their political affiliations,” she said. “Yet we do not want to be associated with hateful speech used by either liberal or conservative television hosts.”

Couldn’t happen to a more deserving guy.

The boycott against Beck’s advertisers is being led by those with connection to the Democratic Party. However, I agree that Crying Becky sometimes takes utter leave of his senses. It isn’t that I agree or not with any of his positions, but that he just goes nuts on the air.

  2. Bill Jempty Says:

Beck is more than nuts. He’s either playing to the most idiotic people out there or he is one of those himself. His spiel on the ‘Widow Penalty’ two months back had me yelling at the television, and when he was through I turned off Fox News permanently during the dinner hour in my house. The guy was so badly informed it is pathetic.

This man, Beck, is absolutely not right in the head.

Had he lived in Hitler’s Germany, he’d probably not have survived. Not bright enough!

  4. McDLT Says:

I’m against sterilization, except for within the Beck family.

  5. J. Tyler Ballance Says:

    I support free speech.

The citizens should boycott: Geico, Procter & Gamble, Sargento Cheese, Progressive Insurance and Color of Change.

While any citizen or corporation is within their rights to withhold support for a program that doesn’t meet their standards of political correctness, the rest of us are also entitled to withhold business from the worshipers of political correctness, who are always trying to impose their politics on the rest of us.

Glen Beck chatters on both radio and TV for four hours, five days per week. It is a wonder that he hasn’t made more faux pas than he has.

The fact that so much of America listens to Beck, Limbaugh and Hannity every day, is a testament, not to the wisdom of these talkers, but to the fact that we have allowed our airwaves to become owned by a small number of multinational oligopolies, who restrict the options for a wider spectrum of political opinions to be heard.

We need to break-up the media oligopolies and to change FCC laws so that radio and TV stations may only be owned by individual, local owners and those local owners cannot own other media in that locality or in any other market. This would ensure that Americans could once again hear a much wider spectrum of thoughts, instead of the steady stream of corporate propaganda that is spewed forth by the likes of Hannity and Limbaugh.

Talk about this with your Representatives.

  6. Anarchist Accountant Says:

Scandia, if Beck lived in Hitler’s Germany, he would be on the air promoting Nazi propaganda in support of Hitler…all corporate tools would.

    J. Tyler, those corporations are practicing free speech, not political correctness, the same way, for example, broadcast corporations did concerning the Dixie Chicks. Problem is, people will only stand for their ideals when it helps their side, not for the ideals themselves.

  7. Scandia Says:

    #6 Ja, ja!!!

He would have made a perfect aide to Joseph Goebbels.

  8. Peter Chuprevich Says:

The fact of the matter is that the Beck is right. This death panel that Obama wants will choose what treatments you get, and in a way this is similar to what the Nazis did.

  9. Acedog Says:

Glen Beck is a ratings whore trying to pass himself off as a journalist, he burns people, not just Democrats, but those who agree to be on his show, they tell them one thing then dish them another when they get on air…hopefully the bean counters who now drive ‘free speeech’ will pull the plug on this cretin.

  10. Doug Mataconis Says:

    Peter,

    Repeat after me.

    THERE IS NO DEATH PANEL.

    Thank you

  11. Marvin Music Says:

Glenn Beck is a lunatic who spreads misinformation and fear. He is a huge part of what’s wrong with America.

  12. nobody Says:

The US is already in civil war with itself, the shooting is not the first stage, but there will be soon if you all go on like this with each other.

  13. Mike Hawk Says:

All you whining liberals make me sick. Glenn Beck is probably the most patriotic sonuvagun out there. I only wish more Americans had the guts to say what Beck is saying. I don’t want Obama and his youth in asia to kill my grandparents. Enough Americans died in Vietnam!

  14. Andrew Says:

    Mike hawks,

    A few points:

-Beck is a moron who lies and stirs controversy to get ratings, like Limbaugh and Hannity, but worse.

-Dubya is responsible for plenty of deaths in Iraq and Afghanistan, and oh yeah, he’s a Conservative.

-Arguing with you is like debating a dining room table.

    Jackass.

  15. Neil C. Reinhardt Says:

As an Agnostic Atheist Activist for over 50 years, I most certainly disagree with Beck & his Programmed Religious Robot religous views. And on some subjects he makes mountains out of mole hills.

STILL Children, MOST of what he says about the PROLIFIC LIAR ODUMA and the IDIOT OBOTS IS TRUE!

It seems “Andrew” is just another Clueless Clod of the Loony Left.

Look CHILD, the Iraq War is Not ONLY FULLY Justified, it is a Necessary part of our War on Terror.

If you do not know this, it is because YOU are either TOO Lazy to get off your butt to do the research to get sufficent FACTS OR you are just too stupid to be able to understand what the facts mean!

    1. Sorry for the double post. My old WebTV and some sites do not let me know for sure if it posted the frist time.

    2. “Bill Jempty” Said “Beck is more than nuts. He’s either playing to the most idiotic people out there or he is one of those himself.”

The odds of you, “Bill” being as knowledgeable and experienced as I am are so close to zero, they may as well be zero. And the odds of you being smarter than I are about the same. So Child, maybe it is you who is the idiot and not those who watch Beck from rarely like me, to those who watch him every night.

  19. Neil C. Reinhardt Says:

    Mr. Mataconis,

The facts are all those who have not attended how to listen effectively classes or somehow, by some miracle either learned how to on their own or were fortunate enough to have an natural ability to do so, read at a LESS than a 24 percent level
    of comprehension.

This means the average person has over a 75 percent chance, what they think they heard was NOT what was said.

Thus, what Beck MIGHT have said is:

“While Obama is NOT Hitler, MANY of his actions are like those of Hitler!

I KNOW this certainly agrees about how I think and feel about Oduma! Hitler was both highly intelligent & totally
screwed up with some kind “Look at me. see how great I am! I am a GOD! attitude,

In my view, so is Oduma. And he proves his extreamy POOR Judgement Skills as well as his very LOW Integrity Level by the type of some of his best friends and mentors.
They include felons, con men/women, white and America hating racist preachers, Socialsts, Communists and TERRORISTS! Terrorists who have Robed our Banks, Bombed Private Firms, Federal and U.S. Military Facilities, Police Stations, Police Cars and who KILLED Americans!

  20. Neil C. Reinhardt Says:

OPPS, Me make a BOO BOO!

    I MEANT to SAY

    “LISTEN at LESS than 24%!”

    SORRY!

    Neil
