I believe in the free speech that liberals used to believe in, the economic freedom that conservatives used to believe in, and the personal freedom that America used to believe in.

Do any of these “birthers” read the various laws and interpretations covering citizenship? They should read the State Deparment Foreign Affairs Manual on this. Even if you are born abroad, so long as one parent is a citizen, you are a citizen. I don’t believe that Obama was born in Kenya; there is no evidence of that. But even it he was, it does not mean that he is not an American citizen under the laws of this country.

My brother-in-law claims that one born abroad cannot be a citizen unless born on a military base, which he claimed is American soil The FAM says this is widely believed but is not true. Neither a military base nor an embassy is American soil for the purposes of citizenship. Otherwise a person who is not a citizen could give birth at Ramstein AFB and be a US citizen.

This argument is based on hatred of Obama and not the facts or the law.

  2. zen says:

Do any of these birthers actually read the US Constitution that they point to when making these ridiculous claims?

If they would they’d see that Article 2 reads as such:
“No person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the Office of President…”

So, according to often cited document, Obama cannot be president. But not for the reasons for which they rely. No, but because President Obama was not born in one of the original colonies. So, guess what, the beloved Ronald Reagan was also illegitimate.

And that also goes for Bill Clinton, Jimmy Carter, Gerald Ford, Richard Nixon, Lyndon Johnson, Dwight Eisenhower, Lincoln, Ulysses Grant, William McKinley, James Garfield, William Howard Taft, Harry Truman, Herbert Hoover, Harding, Harrison and Hayes.

    WOW -

That certainly limits our sources of presidental candidates, doesn’t it.
