It isn’t just the right-wing that trots out religion to push it’s policy agenda, Ed Schultz demonstrated on his MSNBC show last night that the left can do it too:
What would Jesus do? Well, Ed Schultz thinks he knows – that is on health care reform at least.
Schultz, on his Sept. 2 MSNBC program, “The ED Show” [1] told viewers he believed Jesus would vote for a government public option. That, he said, was to the dismay of some on religious right, or what he used the pejorative “Bible thumpers” to describe.
“Now, I have been referring to the health care reform deal as the real moral issue of our time,” Schultz said. “I believe Jesus would vote yes for a public option, but some Bible thumpers don’t see me eye to eye on this one.”
Schultz later elaborated on his statement, likening “fixing health care” to a moral obligation.
“Fixing health care in this country is a moral obligation,” Schultz said. “There isn’t any way around it, at least that’s how I see it and I think the public option to make health care affordable and accessible is a key, fulfilling moral obligation in this country. But some religious leaders don’t agree with me on that.”

Here’s an idea — how about we stop trying to use religion to win political arguments ?

It’s also a nonsensical religious argument. The Christian imperative is to charity. Government, by hypothesis, cannot engage in charity, as it first has to steal any money which it gives to anyone else.
One can certainly criticize the religious right for overreaching, but the “religious” Left hasn’t the foggiest notion about what Christ’s teachings actually were.
So James Y says that the Left is not Christian?
Wonder whether he has ever had a conversation with a so called Left.
My understanding is that Jesus asked the church, not the state to care for the “least of these” so in that James Young is correct. Also, Scandia how did you get Young to be saying the left isn’t Christian? He never even implied that. What he did say is they the liberals seem to not have the foggiest notion about what Christ’s teachings actually were. That’s a big difference from them not being Christian.
I’d like to suggest that Jesus would want people cared for through the generosity of the body of Christ, not some very ill conceived “public option” being pushed by the left.
Remember this desire for a “public option” is about controlling people in ways our forefathers never envisioned or would have stood for constitutionally. If the dems push this alone you will see a revolution of the likes we havent’ seen since the Boston Tea Parties! I think there is much we can do to lower health care costs as many on both sides of the aisle know can be done without the need to impose a public option on a nation strongly opposed to such gov’t interferance and regulation. Socialized medicine is not in our best interest and so I don’t believe Jesus would have been in favor of it for it’s wasteful, bureaucratic, and in the end will not care about the patient nearly as much as the bottom line of rationing care, which will happen if this is passed! No, let the gov’t keep their paws off such things and on cutting costs from greedy drug companies and insurance companies by opening up the free market place so people can buy coverage over state lines and get meds wherever it is cheapest world wide. That will do more to help than any of this heavy handed attempt at controlling the people through an ill advised health care scheme.
If the Dems go through with this “nuclear option” I say “VOTE THEM ALL OUT!” PELOSI, REED, … and yes OBAMA for not leading as a centrist!
Frankie, you’re simply wrong, as many are, about the forefathers’ intentions re: government intervention and growth. The very first thing the Continental Congress did, before knuckling down to writing the Constitution, or debating the inclusion or lack thereof of religion in government etc…the VERY first thing they did: was authorize themselves to collect taxes to pay for government.
The forefathers were bright cookies: Thomas Jefferson advocated a %100 inheritance tax, in order to prevent rich people from becoming a new oppressive aristocracy; Ben Franklin establish public post office, library, and other functions; several of the founders, including Madison, advocated universal public healthcare.
I’ve Hat tiped your post from Wayne’s Discernment
If we are going to say what Jesus would to and not quote the bible instead rely on an “Obama” for moral authority. Then I think it is necessary to look at where the term Cool aid drinker came from.
Another leader who claimed moral authority and created a socialistic community was Jim Jones of Jonestown. He practiced the kind of control over peoples lives that we see in HR 3200
Of course the liberals want to make it a moral issue as they have no other arguement. Have you read Saul Alinsky’s Marxist principles. That is Alinsky’s strategy when all else fails. I believe Jesus said to render unto God that which is Gods and render unto Caeser that which is Caesars. He told the church that the poor and downtrodden were the church’s responsibilty.Schultz is a buffon. How can you make arguements saying what Jesus would do and support abortion? The Christian bible says God knew who you were before you were in your mother’s womb. God ordains life before it is even conceived. I guess that is above Obama’s pay grade to understand. I am not a bible thumper but if your going to say what Jesus would do, you should at least understand what he actually said. Schultz is a hypocrite.
