It looks like college football may find it’s way to Yankee Stadium:

The new Yankee Stadium could soon add an annual college football event, rekindling some of the roots of the old Stadium, as the Big East and Big 12 move closer to a deal to bring a bowl game to the Stadium in 2010.

Though nothing has been completed, both conferences and the Yankees confirmed Monday that a Yankee Bowl was close to a reality.

The game would match the seventh-place team from the Big 12 and the third- or fourth-place team from the Big East.

“We feel that Yankee Stadium is worthy of a bowl game,” said Mark Holtzman, the Yankees’ director of program development. “We’re hopeful that things work out in the not-so-distant future and we’ll have a bowl game.”

The potential of a bowl in New York resonates with the Big East and the Big 12.

For the Big East, the game would be ideal for further branding in New York, cultivating a valued recruiting area. A bowl at Yankee Stadium would also give the conference’s northern universities a game in driving distance for fans. Last year’s pairing would have matched Connecticut or West Virginia against Kansas.

“For us, the concept of having a home bowl in the center of our geography is something that we’ve never had before,” said Nick Carparelli Jr., the Big East’s associate commissioner for football.

Bob Burda, a Big 12 spokesman, said he expected the league to sign an agreement soon; all that remains is approval from its board.

“It’s our intent to sign an agreement with them,” he said.

The old Yankee Stadium, of course, was the home of the New York Giants until they moved to New Jersey and hosted many classic college games.

The last time that a Division I-A team played in the old Yankee Stadium was 1969, when Army and Notre Dame reprised a series that they had played at the stadium for some 20 years between 1925 and 1946.
