I believe in the free speech that liberals used to believe in, the economic freedom that conservatives used to believe in, and the personal freedom that America used to believe in.

Sarah Palin, Birther

The former Mayor of Wasilla, Alaska goes there:

Speaking to the conservative talker Rusty Humphries today, Sarah Palin left the door open to speculation about President Obama’s birth certificate.

“Would you make the birth certificate an issue if you ran?” she was asked (around 9 minutes into the video above).

“I think the public rightfully is still making it an issue. I don’t have a problem with that. I don’t know if I would have to bother to make it an issue, because I think that members of the electorate still want answers,” she replied.

“Do you think it’s a fair question to be looking at?” Humphries persisted.

“I think it’s a fair question, just like I think past association and past voting records — all of that is fair game,” Palin said. “The McCain-Palin campaign didn’t do a good enough job in that area.”

McCain’s campaign counsel has said the campaign did look into the birth certificate question and, like every other serious examination, dismissed it.

Palin suggested that the questions were fair play because of “the weird conspiracy theory freaky thing that people talk about that Trig isn’t my real son — ‘You need to produce his birth certificate, you need to prove that he’s your kid,’ which we have done.”

“Maybe we can reverse that,” she said, returning to Obama’s birth certificate,

Doug, it would be really nice if you didn’t let your Palin Derangement Syndrome lead you to utterly misrepresent what she actually said.

  2. Bleev says:

Yes, Doug tricked the audio, it’s obvious.

  3. Jonathan says:

It wasn’t Doug that did it – The Politico did… Or more accurately, Ben Smith.

The comment added after the audio was cut is a pretty dirty trick… one used by journalists quite often. I’m not a Palin supporter by any means, but the obfuscation tactics the media uses against her is pretty unnecessary and angering.

  4. DEO says:

Ok, Palin is re-inventing again…Palin NEVER produced Trig’s birth certificate. No one ever saw THAT document, ever.

  5. Kristina says:

which statement is supposed to be added in the audio? Where did this audio come from?

Q: Are “Birthers” and “Trigers” so far apart? Do unto others… don’t encourage fringe speculation, tell your supporters plainly that the birther conspiracy theory is unfounded.

  6. John.Frank says:

    Sir,

I am dissapointed with your post, although not surprised. Ms. Palin never said during the course of the interview that she was in favor of the “birther movement.”

But, just as important, you have failed to note that Ms. Palin made the following post on her facebook page, in which she wrote under the title “Stupid Conspiracies:”

“Voters have every right to ask candidates for information if they so choose. I’ve pointed out that it was seemingly fair game during the 2008 election for many on the left to badger my doctor and lawyer for proof that Trig is in fact my child. Conspiracy-minded reporters and voters had a right to ask… which they have repeatedly. But at no point – not during the campaign, and not during recent interviews – have I asked the president to produce his birth certificate or suggested that he was not born in the United States.”

So, please, stop distorting Ms. Palin’s words.

    Thank you,

    John Frank

We should all believe that he is a natural citizen, just as the theory of CO2 induced global warming is based on good science. While we’re at it.. that building 7 collapsed due to fire into its own footprint, That JFK was killed by a single gunman Oswald, and… There is no end to my wonderful list. History is a wonderful thing if only it were true. Were did I hear that last line? Or try this one, “if you repeat the lie often enough it becomes truth.” and lastly
“there is nothing new under the sun.”

  8. Actually, if you noticed, she said that it’s a fair question and the public is right to ask such a question and demand an answer. She said herself in that audio that she doesn’t think she would make a big deal of it, herself.

Doesn’t that kinda make her NOT a “birther”?

  9. Phil,

    It’s a question, alright.

A question that was answered more than a year ago when Barack Obama made his birth certificate available.

Palin in Facebook: “I’ve pointed out that it was seemingly fair game during the 2008 election for many on the left to badger my doctor and lawyer for proof that Trig is in fact my child. Conspiracy-minded reporters and voters had a right to ask… which they have repeatedly.”

Palin in person: “Hey, you know, that’s a great point, in that weird conspiracy-theory freaky thing that people talk about that Trig isn’t my real son. And a lot of people say, “Well you need to produce his birth certificate! You need to prove that he’s your kid!” Which we have done. But yeah, so maybe we could reverse that and use the same [unintelligible]-type thinking on them.”

I like the “Valley Girl” Palin version…the one that uses the words “Hey, you know”, “that Wierd Freaky Thing”, “But Yeah”. The Facebook one sounds like it was written by a speech writer with an education.
Palin Reminds me of President Bush. I think Sarah would make a great Presidential candidate. Saturday Night Live would see their ratings skyrocket

  11. Tom Burns says:

She said that she thinks people has a right to ask and that she supports this right. She never said that she personally questions Obama’s citizenship.

  12. Shiva says:

    Zone,

You are absolutely right. Unfortunately, you will not find too many people here that understand that we no longer have a democracy. The only people that we elect are puppets who are there to take the hit and keep us divided by pissing us off. In the shadows you have the ‘real’ government. The MIC complex and wealthy bankers who decide everything. Until people understand that a coup has slowly taken over since about 1960, we will never, ever, change.
