Below The Beltway

I believe in the free speech that liberals used to believe in, the economic freedom that conservatives used to believe in, and the personal freedom that America used to believe in.

Freedom Alliance Responds To Allegations

by @ Sunday, March 21st, 2010. Filed under Politicos & Pundits, Politics, Sean Hannity

Friday, I posted about allegations made by a conservative blogger of irregularities in the fundraising and operations of Sean Hannity’s Freedom Concerts, run by a group called Freedom Alliance. So, it’s only fair that I note that Freedom Alliance has responded to those allegations and calls them “false and malicious.”
Additionally, another conservative blogger has examined [...]

Washington (CNN) – Democrats have the 216 votes needed to pass health care reform legislation in the House on Sunday, the chairman of the House Democratic Caucus told CNN.
“This is a historic day and we are happy warriors,” Rep. John Larson, D-Connecticut, told CNN’s “State of the Union.” He added, “We’ve got the [...]

Repeal ObamaCare ? Don’t Count On It Republicans

Dan Larison makes this excellent point about the rumblings we’re hearing from Republicans about running on a promise to repeal the health care reform bill if it passes:
One of the major problems we face as a nation is the complete inability to dismantle an entitlement once it is established. Every entitlement typically creates a constituency [...]

ObamaCare, The Constitution, And The Next Round In The Health Care Wars

The Constitutionality of ObamaCare is apparently a subject that neither Nancy Pelosi, nor any other Member of Congress has given any consideration to. In today’s Washington Post, however, Law Professor Randy Barnett takes a look at the probable Constitutional challenges to the health care bill:
Can Congress really require that every person purchase health insurance from [...]

Pope Apologizes For Abuse By Priests, Church Will Continue The Cover-Up

by @ Sunday, March 21st, 2010. Filed under Catholic Church, Religion

An apology from Benedict XVI that turns out to be more of the same:
LONDON — With the Catholic Church facing a sexual abuse scandal that has spread across Europe, Pope Benedict XVI on Saturday issued a rare apology to victims and their family members in Ireland but outlined no disciplinary action or changes in Vatican [...]

So Much For Post-Racial Politics

by @ Saturday, March 20th, 2010. Filed under Barack Obama, Obama Derangement Syndrome, Politicos & Pundits, Politics

Earlier today, I noted the racial epithets allegedly hurled at two African-American Members of Congress during yesterday’s Tea Party protests.
At virtually the same time, I was engaged in a Twitter conversation that started out with me saying this:
So anyone who opposes President Obama’s policies is a racist. Nice
Which prompted this unsolicited response from a Twitter [...]

FireDogLake Whip Count: 217 No Votes ?

by @ Saturday, March 20th, 2010. Filed under Congress, Health Care Reform, Politics

David Dayen at the liberal (and pro-single payer) blog FireDogLake has been on top of the House whip count for two weeks now, and his latest tally is very interesting:
This brings the count to 204-206, with 11 undecided and 10 (still?) in the Stupak bloc. Even if the Stupak bloc has been whittled to a [...]

Report: Tea Party Protesters Yell “N****R” At Two Black Congressmen

by @ Saturday, March 20th, 2010. Filed under Dumbasses, Health Care Reform, Politics

If this really happened, then it’s pretty disgusting:
Rep. Andre Carson (D-Ind.) claimed Saturday that healthcare protesters at the Capitol directed racial epithets at Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.) as he walked outside.
Carson, a member of the Congressional Black Caucus along with Lewis, told The Hill that protesters called Lewis the N-word.
Tea Party protesters held a [...]
