New Poll Gives McCain 15 Point Lead Over Hayworth In AZ-Sen

by @ 3:36 pm on April 3, 2010. Filed under 2010 Elections, Elections, John McCain, Politicos & Pundits, Politics

Well, this is interesting:

U.S. SENATE–ARIZONA–REPUBLICAN PRIMARY

Sen. John McCain 52
J.D. Hayworth 37

(…)

Despite the conventional wisdom that McCain could be vulnerable to an intra-party challenge, we find that McCain has a fairly solid level of favorability among Republicans. His current favorability among GOP voters stands at 76%, with only 19% expressing disapproval.

Hayworth, meanwhile, may well have some upside in the GOP primary, as he is still unknown to about a uarter of the electorate. And it is worth noting that among Republicans, he is well liked (a 61/16 favorability spread).

However, his upside might be limited to a GOP primary. In a general election, he is clearly a greater liability for the GOP. Hayworth is much less popular among both Democratic and Independent voters, and sports an net negative favorability (34/42) among all voters, joining only President Obama (41/55) and incumbent GOP Governor Jan Brewer (39/54) in minus territory.

In fact, McCain leads all of the potential Democratic challengers by far wider margins than Hayworth:

U.S. SENATE–ARIZONA–GENERAL ELECTION

Sen. John McCain (R) 48 (+6)
Bruce Babbitt (D) 42

Sen. John McCain (R) 53 (+19)
Gabrielle Giffords (D) 34

Sen. John McCain (R) 52 (+21)
Rodney Glassman (D) 33

Sen. John McCain (R) 57 (+36)
Nan Stockholm Walden (D) 21

J.D. Hayworth (R) 43 (+1)
Bruce Babbitt (D) 42

J.D. Hayworth (R) 49 (+7)
Gabrielle Giffords (D) 36

J.D. Hayworth (R) 48 (+11)
Rodney Glassman (D) 37

J.D. Hayworth (R) 53 (+31)
Nan Stockholm Walden (D) 22

Only one poll, but very interesting.

Uhhh… I dont know how they structured their poll, or who they were polling; but it wasn’t Arizona likely voters.

First, there isn’t a voter in Arizona who doesn’t know J.D. Hayworth. He was one of our reps (my rep actually) for six terms; and in 2006 was one of the democrats biggest “takedown targets”. They spent over a hundred million dollars to defeat him.

Prior to being a congresscritter, he was a local sportscaster.

J.D. Hayworth spent every day of his life on television in the state of Arizona,in one way or another, from 1987 ’til 2007.

Also, I can testify first hand that McCains negatives among AZ republicans are MUCH higher than that poll reports as well.

And I don’t know where your commenter above gets his information, but multiple polling results back up the article.

Yes, Arizonans know Hayworth. They know he’s a corrupt man who’ll take money from anyone who’s offering it in exchange for a vote or an endorsement. Hayworth consistently makes the list of the “most corrupt politicians”. Arizona residents know this.

I’d love to see Chris’ figures for McCain’s negatives, as well as the methodology used, the sampling data, and the questionnaire. You can rig a poll to come out to say anything you want it to say. Accurate polling is a science.
